Jacob Fowler’s arrival is drastically changing the situation in net for Montreal after his standout performance Wednesday night in Ottawa.

Samuel Montembeault now finds himself in an uncomfortable three-goalie situation to finish the season. Let’s be honest – the Quebecer suddenly becomes the odd man out.

This morning, rumors of a potential assignment to Laval have been circulating, but according to Jonathan Bernier of TVA Sports, that option can be ruled out for now. Monty is ready to do whatever it takes to regain his form, including putting in intense work.

You can sense that he wants it, but the Montreal Canadiens are in a points race and can no longer afford to wait for him.

Despite the rumors, Montembeault has the Canadiens logo tattooed on his heart and refuses to give up.

He is working tirelessly on his hand-eye coordination to correct his weaknesses on long shots.

“In fact, Montembeault is currently exploring every possible avenue to find the source of the problem, especially on long shots. Hand-eye coordination, visual acuity, puck tracking, perceptual-cognitive training techniques – you name it. Apparently, nothing will be left to chance.

The only option being ruled out would be a stint in Laval for a reset, as was the case in December.”

The 29-year-old goaltender absolutely does not want to return to Laval for a reset.

He prefers to remain with the big club, even if his ice time is likely to shrink.

Let’s be honest, the competition with Jakub Dobes and Fowler promises to be fierce for the organization’s future. The Canadiens will have to make a decision before the end of the regular season.

Confidence is fragile, but hope for a turnaround remains with 18 games left.

Montembeault has already proven in the past that he can bounce back after more difficult stretches.

“Sam has lost his bearings and it’s difficult, but he’s still a good goaltender,” Lalime says. “He has to hold on to what he has done well in the past. By the way, he has had some good games since Christmas.”

He often finishes his outings with a heavy workload despite sometimes uneven statistics.

His pride in wearing the Canadiens sweater remains his main driving force moving forward.
