Zack Whitecloud: The Habs Most Realistic Trade Target?
With less than 48 hours before the NHL’s 3:00 pm ET trade deadline, there are a few types of players that the Montreal Canadiens could use for a solid playoff run, such as a bona fide 2nd line centre, a reliable goaltender, or a gritty top-six winger, but the most realistic need that they could fill is a veteran right-handed defenseman. Given how the Habs’ defensive group is very mobile, they would need someone who could keep up with the fast pace while playing a solid defensive game. This is where Zach Whitecloud of the Calgary Flames comes into the conversation as a potential target for the Canadiens.

Whitecloud was recently acquired from the Vegas Golden Knights in a trade package for defenseman Rasmus Andersson, but given how the Flames are in a rebuild, they could potentially be willing to move the 29-year-old once again. He would be a great fit for the Canadiens, as he brings a good amount of playoff experience that includes winning a Stanley Cup with the Golden Knights back in 2023. Experience like that can help the young defensemen on the team grow, as Whitecloud knows what it takes to win. Therefore, he can use what he learned by winning the Cup in 2023 to help mentor other young defensemen on the team.
In terms of playoff games on the Canadiens’ current roster, Noah Dobson leads the way with just 30 games of playoff experience. If they were to add Whitecloud to the fold, his 78 postseason games would be the most on the team and would still be more than the 3 defensemen with the most playoff experience currently combined (Dobson 30 games, Mike Matheson 25 games, and Alexandre Carrier 21 games), who have 76 playoff games between the three of them.

On top of Whitecloud bringing playoff experience, he also provides the Canadiens with a very affordable contract at a salary of $2.7 million up until the end of the 2027-28 campaign. The fact that it has been reported that the Canadiens won’t be very interested in looking into the rental market for trades could make Whitecloud as a potential target more enticing for them.
While David Savard had seriously slowed down by the end of last season and often struggled to keep up, his leadership skills have been missed a lot, and Whitecloud can potentially fill some of those shoes while playing a similar defensive game to how Savard played for the Canadiens down the stretch last season. Whitecloud can be both a solid shot blocker and a hitter, which would allow him to be a good penalty killer for a team that has seen its struggles in that department this season.

Even though he isn’t a rental, Whitecloud should be had at a reasonable price that would be affordable to the Habs, such as a 2nd or 3rd round pick alongside Jayden Struble or Arber Xhekaj, who can provide the Flames with a younger defenseman that can grow and develop more in their lineup as they start their rebuild. At the end of the day, Whitecloud’s game seems like a great fit with the Habs if the Flames are willing to trade him to get assets for the beginning of their rebuild.
