Islanders may not be done dealing — The Fourth Period

Share

The New York Islanders kicked off this week making two trades to help deepen their roster, acquiring defenceman Carson Soucy and winger Ondrej Palat in separate trades.

With just over $6 million in current salary cap space still to play with, Islanders GM Mathieu Darche is not shying away from potentially improving his team even more if the opportunity presents itself.

“I’m not making deals just to make deals. I’m making deals because I think I’m improving the team,” Darche told reporters on Wednesday. “We’re a better team today than we were yesterday with those two players, so if something else comes up that I can improve the team, I’ll look at it.”

Darche suggested he is open to moving a first-round pick for the right player and will be keeping tabs on the trade market leading up to the trade deadline on March 6.

The Olympic roster freeze kicks in next Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 3pm ET.

The Islanders are currently 23rd in the NHL in goals-for, averaging 2.85 goals per game. Even with the addition of Palat, who scored Wednesday in his Isles debut, Darche may try to add more fire power up front by deadline day.
