Schenn open to a change of scenery — The Fourth Period

Share

As the Winnipeg Jets try to make sense of their season – they currently sit last in the NHL with a 15-21-5 record and 35 points – talk of change is starting to make its way around the club.

Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is looking to add some extra fire power to his lineup and would like to add a second-line goalscorer who is under contract beyond this season, but the hunt has proven to be difficult, thus far.

As the Jets explore the trade market for a scorer, they are starting to generate interest in some of the pending unrestricted free agents, one of whom appears open to a move.

During Wednesday’s episode of “DFO Rundown Insider Edition” with Irfaan Gaffar and David Pagnotta, Pagnotta reported that veteran defenceman Luke Schenn wouldn’t mind joining a Stanley Cup contender later this season.

Schenn ranks No.6 on the TFP Trade Watch List.

“The interesting thing is that we’re starting to hear about Luke Schenn, who just played his 1,100th game with the Jets last night,” Pagnotta said. “I don’t know if that’ll be his last with the Jets, but I don’t know how much more runway there is if things continue status quo.

“There is some word that Luke Schenn wouldn’t mind a change of scenery. He would be open to a move. I don’t know if that relates to how the team is performing, and he’s been scratched a few times. I’m sure it all correlates. But the latest that we’ve got on Luke Schenn is he hasn’t asked for a trade, but he is open to a change of scenery. And that’s something that the Jets are monitoring now.”

Schenn, 36, comes with a $2.75 million salary cap hit – an attractive figure for contenders – and can become a UFA this July.

Several teams had interest in Schenn last season and many of those may circle back now to see if he is an option. Teams like the Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights and Washington Capitals may try to bolster their blueline ahead of the trade deadline.
